Name
Paula Evemy
Nickname
Ev - But it’s not really used anymore.
Also use to be called Eager at College, but that’s because I
had flat mates with surname Madden, and Keates.
So we were known as
Mad , Keen and Eager.
I’m trying to get my team mates to find me
a new one, all suggestions welcome!
Age
37 years young,
How did you get to here?
I tend to go at life full tilt. I’ve tried to grab every opportunity
as it passes, by doing so I’ve had lots of fun, been to lots
of places and tried many things. Some things I’ve liked, some
weren’t for me. But I have very few regrets about opportunities
I’ve missed.
What drives you on to achieving the mission?
I want to push myself to my limit, to see what I can achieve.
I knew when
this opportunity came up, that I had to give it my best shot. I also
knew it would be very difficult just to get to the start
line. It is proving to be as difficult as we thought, but that is why
it is worth achieving. If it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing.
I
want to be able to look back and say I achieved something. That ‘I
did something BIG’. The Atlantic is my opportunity to do something ‘BIG’.
Favourite parts of training so far….
I really enjoy the rowing, especially the really long rows! Time on
the water is great.
And least favourite…..
Part of my endurance training was to complete the Paris Marathon, whish
I duly did on 12th April this year, (4hrs 31 min). But actually the
run that really hurt me was the one two weeks prior, I ran from Havelet
to Rocquaine along the cliffs (approx 15 -16 miles). I hit a wall
that day, and wondered if I would complete the run. My running partner,
John Van Katwyk, told me to remember the Atlantic Row (the reason
for the training) and I eventually completed the run.
At the moment my least
favourite training is anything I have to do inside, therefore I am
really not keen on the gym at all!
What have you learnt about yourself that
you didn’t know before?
No matter how fit I get, I still feel the same. You just get faster,
go further, for longer, but it still hurts just as much., because
for some silly reason you just up the rate!
Any fears or apprehensions?
There will something beyond our control that stops us starting and
completing the race.
What do you think you will miss the most during the race?
My friends. I have a great bunch of friends, we meet up most weeks.
They never fail to make me smile, to lift me when I’m down,
to remind me how good my life is. I miss them now if for some reason
I skip a Saturday night out. It is going to be very strange not doing
the Dorset, Cock and Bull run on a Saturday night for a couple of
months.
And miss the least?
I will miss my work colleagues, it is tempting to say I won’t
miss work!
However I think the thing I’ll miss least is the organisation
/ preparation etc that we have had to do in order to do this race.
By the time the race starts it will have been a 16th month slog to
get there. Rowing I hope will be easy in comparison, at least it should
be shorter!
What do those closest to you make of all this?
They have learnt to expect it. Absolutely nobody was particularly shocked.
Most are just trying to work out when I’ll arrive in Antigua,
so they can join the party.
Personal Motto /words of wisdom
I have a few:
In my teenage years my Mottos were
Pain doesn’t hurt.
Death is natural.
If only.
Then I grew up, now my mottos are:
If you don’t dream, your dreams can’t come true.
Never give up.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.
You loose 100% of the races you don’t start.
Pain still doesn’t hurt.
Death is just horrible. |
