Name
Kathy Tracey
Nicknames
Have been called many things most not repeatable! Would answer to “hey
gorgeous” if ever got the chance.
Age
At race start – 43 feeling 33: At race end 43 feeling 143.
How did you get to here?
Now there’s a long tale for a night watch on board.
Suffice for now to say started in New Zealand, went to Fiji, Australia
(or as we kiwis know it: The West Island), England, Wales, France,
Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, USA, Canada,
Morocco, Algeria, Niger, Benin, Central African Republic, Zaire, Uganda,
Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania (bored yet?), Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South
Africa, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Namibia, Botswana, Egypt,
Ireland (where I got Malaria – true – well I suffered the
symptoms there), Turkey, Greece, Italy, Jordan (now I’m bored…)
and Guernsey.
What drives you on to achieving the mission?
I believe we can do it – and when it gets tough – remembering
that if it wasn’t hard it wouldn’t be a challenge.
Favourite parts of training so far….
Squatting 130kg, racing with Geomarine, and taking Mission Atlantic
out to sea.
And least favourite…..
Taking 130kg out to sea (refer to new Geo crew) and racing to squat
on Mission Atlantic (must’ve been that curry)
What have you learnt about yourself that you didn’t
know before?
That I can really enjoy talking to large groups of people – after
I get through the nerves!
Any fears or apprehensions?
Tankers with drunk crews who don’t post a watch at night, my
arse being in shreds, and having to sleep with my mortgage provider
so they won’t repossess my house.
What do you think you will miss the most during the race?
My husband’s cooking
And miss the least?
Traffic Noise
What do those closest to you make of all this?
My husband is having the best time, harassing people for funding, and
learning loads about his marketing and sales ability – he thinks
it’s a great project.
My friends weren’t even vaguely surprised.
My Mum said “Will you row on to New Zealand so we can cheer you
in?!”
Personal Motto /words of wisdom
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you
will be right.
Be the change you want to see in the world (Ghandi)
I also like “big dog, big fleas” which
helps me deal with people who make hurtful or negative comments. (Thanks
to Nigel Risner
for that one)
